Setup VMware Workstation Guest Tools on Ubuntu 19.04 / 18.04 / 16.04

If you’re a new user or students working with Ubuntu guest machine on VMware Workstation host software, your first should be to make sure VMware Workstation Guest Tools are installed…

VMware guest tool enhances the virtual guest machine and improves the management of the machine… When you install a new guest operating system on a VMware Workstation host you should always install the guest tools….

The tool provides tight integration between the host and virtual machine operating systems, improvement to the VM graphics performance, shared folder between the host and guest machines, copying and pasting of text, images and files between the host and guest machine as well as mouse improvement.

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install VMware guest tools on Ubuntu 19.04 / 18.04 and 16.04…

Before installing the guest tool, run the commands below to update Ubuntu…

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove

After updating Ubuntu, run the commands below to install Linux kernel headers and other packages to support the guest tools…

sudo apt-get install gcc build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

When you’re don with the commands above, a good this to do is to reboot the machine to the new kernel and other packages are loaded corrected with the machine starts…

Next, open the guest machine windows from VMware host software and go to VM –> Install VMware Tools from the menu of VMware Workstation Pro….

This will temporarily mount VMware Workstation virtual CD drive with the guest tools content on to Ubuntu guest machine… While the virtual CD drive is mounted, open Ubuntu terminal by press Ctrl — Alt — T keys on your keyboard…

Then run the commands below to extract the content from the virtual CD drive that you must mounted to the /tmp directory… This directory is a temporary location and will be deleted once the system reboots…

tar -xvf /media/$USER/"VMware Tools"/VMwareTools*.gz -C /tmp

Finally, run the commands below to install the tools… Using the -d option with the commands will install all the recommended plugins and modules with the default options…

sudo /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl -d

If you want to manually select the options and configuration, then run it without the -d option..

When the installation completes, reboot your machine and you’re all set!

Install Open VM Tool (OVT)

Another method is to install the Open VM Tools (OVT) that can be installed from Ubuntu default repositories…

OVT is the open source implementation of VMware Tools consisting of utilities to enhance the guest machine… However, I find that installing the guest tool from the host software as demonstrated above is the method that worked best for me…

If you want to try OVT instead, then run the commands below…  Reboot the guest machine once the installation is complete..

sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop

This is how to install VMware Workstation guest machines tools on Ubuntu!

Congratulations! You have successfully installed VMware Guest Tools on Ubuntu 19.04 / 18.04 and 16.04
