Resize and Adjust Ubuntu Dock on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop

When Ubuntu 18.04 LTS was released, I decided to install it on my lab computer running Windows 10 and VMware Workstation Pro. the steps below is how to adjust, resize and move Ubuntu Dock or Dash.

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to resize or adjust Ubuntu dash also known as dock. This post also shows you how change the location of the dash from its default left corner to the right or bottom.

Ubuntu Dash is the bar docked on the left of your screen below the Activities menu. On the left of the overview, you will find the dash. The dash shows you your favorite and running applications. Click the icon on the dash to open the application and if the application is already running, it will highlight it. You can also drag and move icons around on the dash easily.

When you right-click an application icon on the dash, it shows you more options of the app. To access your windows or running applications, click the Activities menu at the top right corner.

Configuring Ubuntu Dock / Dash

To adjust or resize Ubuntu dash, click the System Settings Menu as shown in the image below

Then on the items menu on the left, select Dock

This is where one adjusts or resizes the dock or dash. You can move the button to the right of the Auto-hide the Dock option and it should automatically hide it. By default the size of the dock is set at 48. If that’s too big for your screen, you can reduce it by moving the slider to the left.

To increase, move to the right.

To change the dock position on the screen,  select to option for Position on screen. It can be move to the right or bottom.

Then changes are instant. so when you move the slider or tick the button the changes the settings, those changes are applied immediately.

Switch back to the desktop to view changes made.

  1. When the dock is at bottom is possible to move the lauch icon from right to left.

  2. Spent ages trying to work out how to change Dock icon size before finding this!
It works on Ubuntu 19.10 too.

  3. Even though I’ve used Ubuntu for a decade, I couldn’t find where they hidden the icon size adjustment in 18.04 (I was used to doing it in System Settings under Display). Why it never occurred to me to check out “Dock”, I don’t know, but I’m grateful. Thanks for this post.
