If you need to play commercially available DVDs on Ubuntu, you may need to purchase software and programs that can handle DVD copyright protections. One of these open source programs is Fluendo.

Fluendo works with Linux systems and should be legal in most countries. However, Fluendo is not free.

Alternatively, you can use the unlicensed decoder for Linux, but they are not permitted by law in most countries. So using it may not be legal. Ubuntu allows you to install these codecs and use but you’re doing it at your own risk.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libdvdnav4 libdvdread4 gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly libdvd-pkg
