VMware Workstation Player is a virtualization software that allows users to run multiple guest machines simultaneous on a single host computer. These guest machines can then be configured to run multiple operation systems like Windows, Linux and MacOS…

When looking for an affordable virtualization software to run in your lab environment, VMware Workstation Player should be a great place to start… it’s much affordable than Workstation Pro and free for personal use…

However, if you still can’t afford Workstation Player, you may have to settle for VirtualBox instead… its completely free to use.

This brief tutorial is going to show students and new users how to install VMware Workstation Player on Ubuntu 16.04 / 17.10 and 18.04 LTS desktop..

Step 1: Install Needed Packages

Before VMware Workstation Player, you must install some required Ubuntu packages… to do that, run the commands below

After installing the packages above, go and download VMware Workstation Player from its download page below

Change into the ~/Download folder and install by running the commands below..

cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x VMware-Player*
sudo ./VMware-Player*

When you run the commands above, the installation wizard should launch and guide you through the process… During the installation, you’ll be prompted to enter a license key to enable to activate the software… you can skip for now and purchase a license key later…

VMware Workstation Player used to be free, but apparently not anymore… You must purchase a license to use this production after the trial period is over.

  1. Thank You for the guide. I like you thought VMware was still free. I may have to try Oracle or Virtual Box.

  2. According to the FAQ, https://www.vmware.com/products/player/faqs.html. it is still free for personal, at-home use, as of 08/17/18. If you have a license key you get some additional features that they mention on that link. For Academic and Student use it looks like they are saying you need a paid license now.

Thank you for the write up for the installation instructions.

  3. it does not work, I get a “files list file for package ‘gcc’ is missing final newline” error
Up to now I could not fix the problem…
