Install VMWare Tools on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop

I started testing the new Ubuntu 18.04 beta. so, I installed it on my Windows 10 machine running VMware Workstation 14 Pro. For those wanting to test the new Ubuntu 18.04 on VMware Workstation, the steps below shows you how to get VMware Tools installed.

VMware Tools are suite of utilities that enhances the virtual machine’s operating systems and improves the management of the machine. When you install a new operating system on a VMware virtual machine, your first task should be to install the VMware Tools.

The tools also provides tight integration between the host and virtual machine operating systems, improvement to the VM graphics performance, Shared folder between the host and guest machines, copying and pasting of text, images and files between the host and guest machine as well as mouse improvement.

So, VMware Tools is pretty important to have on the guest operating system.

To install the VMware Tools on Ubuntu virtual machine operating systems, select the VM from WMware Workstation application menu and click Install VMware Tools.

VMware Guest Tools

This should mount a virtual CD/DVD drive inside the Ubuntu guest machine. When that happens, open Ubuntu terminal and run the commands below to extract the content from the CD/DVD drive to the /tmp drive by running the commands below.

tar -xvf /media/$USER/"VMware Tools"/VMwareTools*.gz -C /tmp

Next, run the commands below to install the guest tool using the default configuration.

sudo /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/

VMware Tools suites of utilities are the official tools for VMware Workstation guest machines. When you run the commands above, you’ll get series of prompts during the installation.

Do you still want to proceed with this installation? [yes]

Answer Yes to begin the installation and continue answering [Yes] and pressing the Enter key to accept the default directories to install all features and modules. when you’re done restart and you’re all set!~

If you run into issues that the installation is unable to find the ifconfig commands, run the commands below to install net-tools.

sudo apt install net-tools

Then start the installation over. this time it should go through.

The Open Source Version

Alternatively, you can install the opensource version of VMware Tools. however, I’ve found that the official tools are better for VMware Workstation’s guest machine operating systems. You can test it out to see if it works in your environment.

To install the tool, run the commands below:

sudo apt install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop

Restart the guest machine and you’re set.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed VMware Tools on Ubuntu guest machine.
