Option #1: Install Atom IDE from Repository
To install Atom using its official repository, you’ll have to add it to Ubuntu. You can install the app from Ubuntu default repositories. however, the version that comes with Ubuntu may not necessarily be the latest.
To install the latest version, follow the steps below. First run the commands below to install the repository key.
wget -q https://packagecloud.io/AtomEditor/atom/gpgkey -O- | sudo apt-key add -
To ensure apt is set up to work with https sources, run the commands below.
sudo apt update sudo apt install apt-transport-https
Next, run the commands below to add its repository.
sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=amd64] https://packagecloud.io/AtomEditor/atom/any/ any main"
