This post shows students and new users steps to install HPLIP on Ubuntu Linux. If you’re going to be using HP printers with Ubuntu, you should definitely install the latest versions of HPLIP drivers.
HP Linux Printer Drivers (HPLIP) version 3.18.9 was released with support for some new printers. To support the latest HP printers, you should definately install the latest version of HPLIP.
HPLIP is updated frequently to support newer printers as they become available. If you’ve just acquired a new HP printer it will mostly work with the latest version of Ubuntu.
However, if the printer is not supported by Ubuntu or the drivers are not installed, installing HPLIP might make the drivers available. This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install HPLIP on Ubuntu to support the latest HP printers.

To install the latest driver on Ubuntu desktop, run the commands below to download it.
cd /tmp && wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.18.9.run
Then run the commands below to install the driver package.
sh hplip-3.18.9.run
The installation wizard should start up and help you install the drivers. Type y to begin the installation.

Then a to choose the automatic installation mode by typing a
INSTALLATION MODE

Automatic mode will install the full HPLIP solution with the most common options.
Custom mode allows you to choose installation options to fit specific requirements.
Please choose the installation mode (a=automatic*, c=custom, q=quit) : a
INTRODUCTION
------------
This installer will install HPLIP version 3.18.9 on your computer.
Please close any running package management systems now (YaST, Adept, Synaptic, Up2date, etc).
Continue with installation for the version of Ubuntu. After a few minutes, the installation should complete.
The new driver may prompt you to remove existing HPLIP drivers to install the newer one. Please choose to do that to continue.
HPLIP-3.17.10 exists, this may conflict with the new one being installed.

Check for updates, then restart when prompted.
