Most hard drives have tools to diagnose, identify and repair issues before the drive fails. If you’re using an older drive that does not have tools to detect and repair problems, you can use ScanDisk to scan for and repair issues in Windows 11.

Before running ScanDisk, it is recommended to close all open programs to ensure that disk activity is minimal while the disk is being scanned. Booting in to Windows Safe Mode should also be consider to get the best results.

There are multiple ways one can use ScanDisk in Windows 11. The easiest way is to use File Explorer to check for disk errors.

First, open a File Explorer from the Start menu or by pressing the Windows key+E on your keyboard.

In the File Explorer, click This PC in the left navigation pane.

Under Devices and drives, right-click the drive you want to scan and select Properties. The most likely drive should will be Local Disk (C:).

If you don’t see the Properties option in the right-click menu, click Show more options to view an expanded menu, and then select Properties in that menu.

On the Properties window, select the Tools tab, and click the Check button to check the drive for and repair errors.

When prompted, select Scan drive option to begin scanning or errors.

Alternately, one can use the Command Prompt to perform the same actions above. You’ll need to open the Command Prompt as administrator.

Once the Command Prompt app is open, run the commands below to start ScanDisk.

sfc /scannow

Do not close the command prompt window until the scan process is complete. When done, it should give you a report including option to repair bad drive sectors.
