For students and new users looking for help upgrading to Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) [BETA] today, the steps below should be a great place to start…. Cosmic Cuttlefish will be released on Octerber 18th, 2018… so if you’re upgrading today, you’ll be upgrading to the [BETA] version…. as the final version isn’t yet available…
The steps below show you how to upgrade from previous versions, Ubuntu 16.04 | 18.04 LTS… this may be an easy way to test the upcoming version against your environment and other application settings…
Remember that 18.10 is still in beta and not ready to be used in production… however you can upgrade to begin testing new features that are coming soon… In most cases, installing a new desktop on your machine might be the best way to go… but some users aren’t that technical.. so they may choose to upgrade instead…
If you’re in the mood to upgrade your Ubuntu desktop today, follow the steps below to get it done… new users and students should find the steps below useful when deciding to upgrade Ubuntu 16.04 | 18.04 LTS…
Step 1: Setup Ubuntu Desktop for Upgrade
Before upgrading Ubuntu desktop, make sure to update your current installed packages…. This can easily done via Ubuntu’s Software Updater app… To update Ubuntu desktop, open Ubuntu Dash or Activities Overview and search for Software Updater… then select it to open.
When Software Updater opens, install all packages that are available to be updated… When you’re done, re-open Software Updater and you should see that the computer is up to date….
Step 2: Upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10 from 16.04 | 18.04 LTS
Now that your current desktop is updated, you can now continue to upgrading to Ubuntu 18.10…. Follow the steps below to get it done..
First, open Ubuntu Dash or Activities Overview again, this time you’ll want to search for Software & Updates… select to open
When it opens, select the Updates tab and validate that Notify me of a new Ubuntu version is set for any new version… If not, select it and save your changes and close out..
Since both Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 are LTS (Long term support) version, you must change the update notifications for any new release version…
After changing Ubuntu upgrade notification settings, press Alt + F2 on your keyboard to open the run command box… this box allows you to run Ubuntu commands… when it opens, type the commands below to press Enter.
After that, it should see a notification that Ubuntu 18.10 is now available…. Click the Upgrade… button to begin the upgrade wizard….
