How to Upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.10

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to Ubuntu 20.10.

If you have a decent Internet connection, the process to upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu is pretty straightforward. One can now upgrade from a LTS version of Ubuntu to a non-LTS version.

To upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10, your desktop must be on the latest version of Ubuntu 20.04. If your machine is on an earlier version, then you’ll need to upgrade twice: From earlier to Ubuntu 20.04 and then to Ubuntu 20.10.

Ubuntu 20.04 is a Long Term Support version (LTS). Ubuntu 20.10 is a Short Term Support version (STS). Because LTS versions only notify users when a new LTS version is available, you won’t see a notification to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10 since it’s not an LTS version.

In order to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10 from 20.04, you must configure your machine to see notification of non-LTS versions.

To do that, follow the steps below:

Go to the Activities Overview and search for “Software & Updates” app

When the app opens, go to the “Updates” tab

Find the section titled “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version

Change “For long-term support versions” to “For any new version

Click ‘Close

That should do it!

To see Update notification for Ubuntu 20.10, go back to the Activities overview dashboard and search for ‘Software Updater‘ app.

Open the app and update all packages that are waiting to be updated. When you’re done, Ubuntu should notify you of pending upgrade to 20.10.

If you don’t see a notification, restart and log back in.

Go back to Software Updater again and this time you should see a notification to upgrade.

A list of packages that will be upgraded will be shown to review. Go through the list to find conflicting packages and also packages that won’t be available in the new version.

If you’re satisfied with the results, you can then continue with the upgrade. Depending on the speed of your Internet service, it could take anywhere from 15 minutes to more than an hour.

That should do it!
