How to Turn On or Off Mono audio in Windows 11

This post shows students and new users steps to enable or disable Mono audio in Windows 11. By default, Windows plays sound through stereo mode – meaning different things in sound play through both the left and right speakers.

With an earbud or headset, both left and right speakers are also playing different things in stereo mode. Windows also supports Mono audio – meaning sounds, and everything are combined and played through both speakers. Mono audio combines left and right audio channels into one.

If you have an earbud and you want to listen only in one ear, you can turn on Mono audio so that everything is combined and played into both speakers. You’ll get a better audio quality with Mono audio using only one earbud or headset playing in only one ear.
