This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install and setup printers on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04.

If you need to install a local desktop printer on Ubuntu, the guide below should be a great place to start. You will learn how to add printers to your Ubuntu desktops easily.

Ubuntu and Linux as a whole have come a long way. Now Ubuntu can recognize many printer brands with their drivers installed and ready to use.

Since most printers are connected using a USB connection, it’s becoming much easier to install printers on Ubuntu and other Linux operating systems.

When a printer is connected and setup correctly, you will be able to print directly from Ubuntu to that printer with ease.

Ubuntu has also made installing network printers easier by putting the installation wizard on the same windows. Previously, installing a network printer was separate page.

Follow the steps below to get a local printer connected and installed on Ubuntu

  • Make sure the printer is turned on when you connect the USB cable to the Ubuntu desktop.

  • When the printer is connected, you may see activity on the screen as the system searches for drivers, and you may be asked to authenticate by typing your password to install them.

  • A message will appear when the system is finished installing the printer. Select Print Test Page to print a test page, or Options to make additional changes in the printer setup.

If the above step didn’t work and Ubuntu is unable to install the printer, follow the step below.

  • Open the Activities at the top left corner of your screen and select overview and start typing Printers.

  • Click Printers from the overview display

  • Click the Unlock button in the top-right corner and enter your password to authenticate. Only administrators on the Ubuntu machine can add printers. If you’re not an administrator, please contact one.

  • Click the + button.

  • In the pop-up window, select your new printer. Click Add.

If you are still unable to install your printer, then you may have to install the printer drivers from the manufacturer website.

  1. I am unable to install a printer in 20.04. When clicking the Activities panel, I have to type in Printers and the get to a lot of software options.
    I am at a loss.
I had 18.04 until last week and the printer worked on there.
It is a network printer, thus no cable.
    Could you please help?

  2. On Ubuntu 18.04 I see no option anywhere to print a test page. Nowhere.

  3. So far I am unable to get my Cannon 2920 printer to work on 20.04. It shows it is added as a printer but thats it. worked fine on 18.04 install

  4. Ubuntu is hell! My Epson printer is installed but the thing isnt printing!!!

  5. I am using Acer Spin5 (very good)

I had to go back to 18.04
The printer Epson-Stylus SX235W was immediately recognized and mounted without doing anything.

Moreover under 18.04 the [Desktop Entry] work perfectly while
under 20.04 it is almost impossible to have it working

  6. With earlier versions of Ubuntu, I was able to use my HP bluetooth printer, but in 20.04 I cannot run the printer on bluetooth— However it does work just fine with a USB cable connection. My research indicates that 20.04 does not support a bluetooth printer- I suspect it is viewed as old technology. I did just help a friend setup her new 20.04 computer. She has the WiFi connected printer (HP), and all I had to do was turn on the printer and it connected automatically and began working– it was like a miracle!

I suspect that the ubuntu software is still around from those earlier versions and that a person with the knowledge could get a bluetooth printer working with 20.04. Any ideas? Curt

  7. Well, my Ubuntu 20.04 does not even see the bloody printer – funny it worked fine yesterday..
