This post shows students and new users steps to rename or change the name of audio devices on Windows 11. When you have multiple audio devices connected to Windows, renaming them so you can identify each quickly might be something you want to do.

It will really suck when you select the wrong audio device to play a video that’s offensive to others or play an embarrassing music to the wrong sound device. You can save yourself some embarrassments and rename your audio devices so you know each device attached to your computer.

Although Windows tries to display the name of the devices according to the manufacturer naming convention, sometimes it’s hard to tell which device is which based on its name. So Windows allows users to rename devices attached to their computers with unique names. You can provide each device with a unique and descriptive name so you can tell it apart from the others.

As mentioned above, Windows allows users to rename audio devices attached to your computer. You can give each device a unique and descriptive name to tell it apart from the other so you don’t go blasting music out of the wrong device.

Below is how to do that.

Windows 11 has a centralized location for majority of its settings. From system configurations to creating new users and updating Windows, all can be done from its System Settings pane.

To get to System Settings, you can use the Windows key + i shortcut or click on Start ==> Settings as shown in the image below:

Windows Settings pane should look similar to the image below. In Windows Settings, click System, and select Sound on the right pane of your screen shown in the image below.

On the Sound settings pane, under Output, select the sound or audio device you’d like to rename. All audio devices connected to your computer should be listed under Output.

For each device, click on the right-ward arrow on the Speakers tile to get to the device settings pane.

On the device settings pane, under the device name, click the Rename link. This will open the name properties window. In there, type a unique name for the device, then click the Rename button to save.

You can also do the same for Input devices. Devices under the Input section can be renamed as those under Output.

You changes and new name should apply immediately. The next time you want to use the output device, choose the unique name to output the sound to. This is way better than guess what each device is.
