To get started with installing VMware Workstation Pro on Ubuntu, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Install Needed Packages

Before installing VMware Workstation Pro, you may want to install some required Ubuntu packages that will allow you to install the software.

To do that, run the commands below:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gcc build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Step 2: Download VMware Workstation Pro

After installing the packages above, go and download VMware Workstation Pro from its download page below.

You may have to create an account and login to download.

At the time of this writing, the latest version of VMware Workstation Pro is at 15.5.2.

Run the commands below to download the latest at the time of this writing.

cd /tmp
wget https://download3.vmware.com/software/wkst/file/VMware-Workstation-Full-15.5.2-15785246.x86_64.bundle

Step 3: Install VMware Workstation Pro

After downloading above, run the commands below to install VMware Workstation Pro….

sudo chmod +x VMware-Workstation-*.bundle
sudo ./VMware-Workstation-*.bundle

After installing, you should get similar message as shown below:

Extracting VMware Installer…done.
Installing VMware Workstation 15.5.2
Configuring…
[######################################################################] 100%
Installation was successful.

After that, go to the Activities Dashboard and launch the app.

When the app opens, it should start a wizard.

Next, select the user that will initially connect to VMware Workstation Pro. Additional user and administrators can be configured later after successfully installing…

On the next screen, select the folder or directory to store the virtual machines files and settings. The default location is usually OK..

After the 15 day trial period, you’ll be forced to purchase a license to use after that time.
