How to Install Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install Microsoft Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04.

Visual Studio Code is an open source, cross-platform code editor developed and built by Microsoft. It is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux platforms.

It comes with built-in support for Git control, syntax highlight, code completion and also combines simplicity and speed for any developer looking to build great applications across different platforms.

Go beyond syntax highlighting and autocomplete with IntelliSense, which provides smart completions based on variable types, function definitions, and imported modules.

You can review diffs, stage files, and make commits right from the editor.

This simple editor is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. and this brief tutorial is going to show students and new users how to install it on Ubuntu 16.04 / 18.10 / 18.04 desktops.

When you’re ready to install Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu, follow the steps below:  There are multiple ways to install Visual Studio Code.

The steps below describe three methods to install Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu desktop.

Install via Repository

To install Visual Studio Code via its repository, use the steps below. If you add a package repository to Ubuntu and install from there, anytime there’s a new update, Ubuntu will automatically download and install it.

In most cases, you will want to install Ubuntu packages from thier repositories. They’re easy to manage that way.

First, install these requirements:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https wget

Then run the commands below to add the Visual Studio Code repository to Ubuntu.

wget -q -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=amd64] stable main"

Finally, run the commands below to install the package.

sudo apt install code

That’s it!

Install via DEB Package

To install Visual Studio Code using its DEB package, simply go to this link below and select the .DEB version… 64-bit should be good if your system supports it. Then download it to your desktop (usually to the Downlaods foldero of your Home directory).

Download and save the file to your desktop… usually in the ~/Downloads folder of your Home directory.

After downloading, navigate to your Downloads folder, then right-click the downloaded file and select Open With Software Install.

When Ubuntu Software opens, click Install to begin the installation.

That should prompt you to type and confirm your password before the installation can continue… When you’re done, Visual Studio Code should be installed and ready to use… To launch it, go to the Activities Overview and search Visual Studio Code and launch it.

Install via Snap

If the options above didn’t work for you. you can also install Visual Studio Code via Snap package management.   This might be the quickest way to install Visual Studio Code. 

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

sudo apt install snapd
sudo snap install vscode --classic
