How to Install Skype on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to install Skype on Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04.

Skype, owned by Microsoft is a very popular free VOIP software use to make free Skype-to-Skype calls and text to stay in touch with friends and family.

Skype for Linux was recently updated, and this new version adds some new features including, enhanced user interface, cloud-based group chat experience, PulseAudio support and file transfer improvements across multiple devices and bunch of other fixes.

If you still using an older version of Skype, you may want to upgrade to take advantage of some of the latest features included with the new version….

To install or upgrade Skype, select either option below.

The two options below should get Skype installed on your desktop.

Option #1 will download and install Skype .DEB package file, and option #2 will use Snap package management to get it added to Ubuntu.

Either option should work fine.

Option #1: Download and Install

To download and install the latest version of Skype on Ubuntu, simply run the commands below. If you have previous versions installed, you can remove by running the commands below:

Open your terminal either by using the Ctrl + Alt + T keyboard shortcut or by clicking on the terminal icon.

sudo apt purge skypeforlinux && sudo apt autoremove

After uninstalling, use the steps below to download and install the latest version.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install apt-transport-https wget

Next, run the commands below to download the latest version of Skype.

wget https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.deb

Finally, run the commands below to install Skype

sudo apt install ./skypeforlinux-64.deb

Now go to the Activities –> Dashboard and search for Skype. Launch it and start using it.

During the installation process, the official Skype repository will be added to your system. This ensures that Skype will automatically be updated when newer versions are available.

To view the repository file, run the commands below:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list

It should display similar line as shown below:

deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main

Option #2: Install Skype via Snap

If the option above didn’t work for you… you can also install Skype via Snap package management….  This might be the quickest way to install Skype.

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build.

They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

sudo apt install snapd
sudo snap install skype --classic
