This post shows students and new users steps to enable or disable input language keyboard layout per app in Windows 11. Windows allows users to install additional languages as well as keyboards to support installed languages for language-specific key layouts and input options.

When you have multiple input language keyboards installed, you can switch the keyboard layout you’re using; press and hold the Windows key and then repeatedly press the Spacebar to cycle through all your installed keyboards.

In Windows 11, the default sequence is Left Alt + Left Shift and Win + Space. There are other ways one can switch between input language keyboards as well, including using language bar and language abbreviation on the Taskbar.

By default, when you switch the keyboard layout, it applies globally to all open windows. This means that when you switch from one language to another in any app, you will also have the current input language keyboard layout in any running app like web browser or File Explorer.

As mentioned above, when you switch the keyboard layout, it applies globally to all open windows. This means that when you switch from one language to another in any app, you will also have the current input language keyboard layout in any running app like web browser or File Explorer.

Below are shortcuts and steps to change the keyboard layout in Windows 11.

When you have multiple preferred languages installed, you should have similar screen in Settings > Time & language > Preferred languages

For each preferred language, when you go into the language option, you should be able to add additional input keyboard layout.

Now to turn on per app input method, go to the Start menu > Settings > Time & language > Typing.

On the Typing settings pane, select and click the Advanced keyboard settings tile.

On the Advanced keyboard settings pane, check the box for Let me use a different input method for each app window.

That should do it! You can now close the Settings app.

Going forward, each app’s window will have its individual keyboard layout.
