When Ubuntu 18.04 LTS was released, I decided to install it for testing purposes… the steps below is how to disable Ubuntu lock screen on the desktop… if you want to do it, the steps below should be a great place to starts…
If you step away from your Ubuntu desktop for a short while it will automatically lock the screen to prevent others from accessing your files or programs. This feature is included for security reasons.
You can also manually lock the screen by selecting the system menu at the top right corner and clicking the lock icon on the menu pane. Doing this will lock the screen instantly. To return to your desktop raise the lock screen curtain to reveal the logon screen. Enter your password to logon.
When your screen is locked, other users can log in to their own accounts by clicking Log in as another user on the password screen. You can switch back to your desktop when they are finished.
Ubuntu lock screen is good, however, it can be annoying at times. If you’re not concern about security and which to turn of the lock screen, continue below to learn how to.
To disable Ubuntu lock screen, click the system menu at the top right corner and select Setting.
Then select Privacy on the left menu and show the privacy options. On the privacy pane, select Screen Lock
Clicking the Screen Lock will display the option to disable. Tick the button to OFF to disable as shown below.
Exit and you’re done. You computer will never lock its screen again when it is idled.
Summary:
Although this is a security feature, it can be annoying at times especially when you’re alone. The lock screen feature prevents unauthorized access. It’s very useful in public settings. But when you’re alone and no one around to access your computer, it’s probably not necessary.
So, in public settings enable the lock screen but when you’re alone and busy between different tasks away from your computer, you should probably disable and make Ubuntu less annoying.
Enjoy!

Thank you
Disabling the lock is one thing, but Blank Screen still comes with a digital clock that covers the whole screen which requires me to drag it up to unlock the screen. Is there an option to not have the clock. I want just a blank screen.
exactly, in short: disable lock screen does NOT function!
It is not possible this way, but I believe that setting ‘never’ for screen dimming in power settings and adding`xset dpms ` to the list to be run at startup should work. I recommend checking out this answer – that’s how I got to know this command: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/194582/turn-screen-off-when-inactive-for-time-period-in-rhel-and-debian .
I believe that sadly the placeholders I used were interpreted as HTML tags and are not visible in my initial comment. That’s what I meant: `xset dpms \timeout value\ \timeout value\ \timeout value\`.
very interesting how this distro allows for this change without prompting for password
also I was mainly looking for a way to ‘Loose the time and date’ that shows when I unlock the screen
But thanks for this simple fix
I will continue to test.
I don’t get those options. The only left-hand options I have are About, Date & Time, Users, and Default Application. Users doesn’t have those options either.
On 18.04 (bionic) I get the options, but I have to hit back to get them. Then I turn off the log in screen… and still have a log in screen!
Yeah, if you’re missing options in the menu then you have to click the back arrow as Rebecca said – thanks for pointing that out Rebecca!
yes even though this removes the use of a password after a screen times out, you still have a lock screen with the time that you have to “swipe up” on to unlock the screen. it’s super annoying and so far i haven’t seen an option to get rid of it. i’m going to keep searching.
“Super annoying” is right. It’s a lock screen that claims not to be a lock screen! Who ever thought this would be a good idea to hard-bake this into the UI? It’s particularly a bad idea for accessibility. The button-down-pressure and dragging motion required can be hard on someone with arthritic fingers. It’s extremely rare for me to shout, but FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND DECENT — PLEASE FIX THIS!
Just installed ubuntu 18.0x but… and I wish I could disable the screen lock as you describe.
However… impossible for me!
Whenever I open settings, the mouse pointer goes to the bottom right of the screen and I am forced to log in again… and again, and again…
EXTREMELY ANNOYING and cannot get anything done (like changing monitor resolution). What gives?
From Terminal. Check current status

$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen ‘true’

Thanks for pointing to the right direction.
In Ubuntu 18.04 it’s true and false without quotation marks:
Disable it
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen true
Enable back
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen false
Everything was working perfectly, and suddenly, I can not edit the screen lock window. Everything within is grey. I didn’t touch anything nor played with the configurations.
I can no longer lock the screen. Shortcut does not work. The icon to lock screen has disappeared.
Any idea? thanks!
P.S.
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen
returns false.Yep, this post is totally useless. If you close the lid, bang, you still get locked out, no matter what you do. USELESS! Do you research next time.
thanks for nothing. Lock screen still happens this just makes it so i dont have to enter a password. still have to do the infuriating slide up crap.
