Creating Wireless (Wi-Fi) Hotspot on Ubuntu 16.04 | 18.04 LTS

You can use your computer as a wireless hotspot to share your Internet connection with others…. Some laptops come with built-in mobile network adapter as well as a Wi-Fi interface… If you’re in a remote location where only mobile network is available, you can connect to the mobile network via your built-in mobile interface and share your Wi-Fi adapter with others..

This setup allows other devices to connect to your laptop Internet without a separate network, and allows you to share an internet connection you’ve made with another interface, such as to a wired network or over the cellular network…

If you’re also on a wired network and want to share a hotspot you can also do that… With this setup, you must plug your laptop to the wired network… (Ethernet), then enable Ubuntu hotspot on your Wi-Fi adapter to share with others…

This brief tutorial is going to show students and new users how to enable Ubuntu hostpot to share Internet connection with others..

To get started, follow the steps below:

While your laptop is connect to a mobile network or a wired connection (Ethernet):

  1. Open the system menu from the right side of the top bar.

  2. Select  Wi-Fi Not Connected or the name of the wireless network to which you are already connected… The Wi-Fi section of the menu will expand.

  3. Click Wi-Fi Settings.

  4. Click the Use as Hotspot… button.

  5. If you are already connected to a wireless network, you will be asked if you want to disconnect from that network…. A single wireless adapter can connect to or create only one network at a time. Click Turn On Hotspot to confirm.

Ubuntu hotspot setup

Your Wi-Fi adapter that isn’t connected to any network should be ready to enable Hotspot… Remember, one other network device need to already be connected to a network with Internet access… this other device can be a built-in mobile network adapter or a wired connetion adapter…

Confirm and turn on the Wi-Fi Hotspot

Ubuntu hotspot install

After that, others should now be able to connect to your laptop hotspo…

A network name (SSID) and security key are automatically generated…. The network name will be based on the name of your computer. Other devices will need this information to connect to the hotspot you’ve just created.

Enjoy!
